Career and Jobs Day at UCHS a Success

By Mike Hutchens – Communications Director
The future was on display for many Union City High School juniors and seniors Wednesday.
UCHS hosted more than 20 local businesses and area vocational programs in a Career and Job Fair in the school Commons area.
Vendors handed out informational packets and goodies with their business/school logos and answered questions of many students who took advantage of the opportunity to “see what’s out there after they graduate,” according to Union City High School guidance counselor Susan Searcy.
“I thought it was a wonderful opportunity for our students to make a great first impression with the professional community. Whether they are planning to go straight into the workforce or to further their education after high school, this was a good opportunity for our juniors and seniors to practice their people skills with future employers.”
Representatives from Baptist Memorial Hospital, ATA, Discovery Park of America, Williams Sausage, CenterPoint, Magnolia Place, Insteel Systems, the UT Extension Office, Northwest Tennessee Boys and Girls Club and several others were set up to provide information and answer questions.
A handful of schools offering 6- to 12-month vocational programs were in attendance as well, including TCAT-Newbern, TCAT-McKenzie, Dyersburg State and Bethel University. Searcy and UC Assistant Director of Schools Michael Paul Miller coordinated the event, which was also open to the general public after school hours.
“One of our objectives at Union City Schools is to make sure our students are prepared for whatever career path they choose,” Miller said. “Obviously, attending college after high school is an option, but so, too, are many outstanding opportunities to immediately join the workforce. Many of these businesses are looking for workers and are in the hiring mode now. I believe having them on our campus and having them available to answer questions can open our students’ eyes to several rewarding and well-paying careers after high school.
“I’m certainly appreciative of (UC Director of Schools) Mr. (Wes) Kennedy for letting me host this event and the tremendous amount of help I received in putting everything together from Mrs. Searcy.”
Miller has said UC Schools hopes to host another such event in the spring.
