Students Rewarded With UTM Hoops

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director
Union City, Tenn.–For one day, Purple and Gold became part of the unofficial team colors of the University of Tennessee at Martin women’s basketball.
Students from Union City Schools, along with those from the Obion County and Weakley County systems, were in attendance Monday to see Chelsey Perry score a career-high 42 points in leading the Skyhawks to an 83-67 victory over visiting David Lipscomb at the Elam Center.
Over 800 UC students helped make up an enthusiastic crowd of 4,120 for the contest, which annually attracts area school youths who’ve exhibited good behavior during the first semester.
Of that group from Union City Schools, 247 were third- and fourth-graders, who were identified as having positive behavior by school administration and teachers. Another 280 came from grades 5-8 at UC Middle School, those students earning the field trip honor for having no detentions, suspensions or ISS assignments.
The remainder – around 150 or so students – represented Union City High School after they had perfect attendance or no ISS visits for the month of November.
The game annually has the highest attendance of any game of the season for UT Martin.
Students not only enjoyed the big UTM victory, but also vied for prizes and participated in numerous activities during timeouts and at halftime.
The Skyhawk women gave head coach Kevin McMillan his 200th career win at the school with the lopsided victory.
