Henry, Tenn.–Thursday night’s meeting of the Henry County Schools board of education was an especially busy one and in addition to the synthetic turf decision, several other important items of business were handled. The meeting was held at Henry School:

–The board voted to donate its supplements back to the district for continuation of the Read To Be Ready camp and a board scholarship.

Dr. Watkins said, “I just want to say what an outstanding to this system this shows by our board members. That this board is willing to give up their supplements to serve these students says a lot.”

–The school board approved a proposal from Preston Pooler of Boy Scout Troop 222 for construction of a greenhouse at Lakewood School. He said the greenhouse would provide a hands-on learning experience in agriculture for students at the school. In his proposal, he listed what could be provided by the Boys Scouts and the things that would be provided by the school district, such as utilities and insurance.

He said he plans to begin construction late April or early May which will give him enough time to conduct fund-raisers for the project.

Board Members said it was a great project. The project also was recommended by Lakewood Teacher Mary Kate Paschall and Supervisor Betsy Allison.

–The county’s Spelling Bee winners were announced by Supervisor Daniel Armstrong and each received gifts: Ryne Lindsey, 4th grade Lakewood Elementary; Conner Clark, 8th grade Lakewood Middle; Drake Goldman, 8th grade Harrelson and Logan Osborn, 8th grade Henry School. The four will know on Monday whether they move forward to the regional bee.

–At the meeting’s outset, Board Member Rod Frey said how much he appreciates Dr. Watkins and the central office staff, principals and teachers. “We have a big difference in our school system now,” Frey said. “I think our school system is coming along real well and I want to thank the people that’s responsible for it”

–Henry Principal David Kibbler and Assistant Principal Robin House reported on activities at Henry School, which includes new stations set up with tools for the ag program, thanks to a PLUS Endowment grant; parent-teacher conferences which include over 20 local agencies and programs on hand; and the Thrift Store operated by the school which provides free clothing and supplies.

Missy Blount reported on the Henry Thrift Store, which she noted helps people all over Henry County, not just in Henry. “We are thankful for all the donations. We’re crowded with donations and we’re thankful for that. We’ve been able to help people who’ve had fires or other tragedies. We have a bit of everything there for everybody.”

Blount volunteers her time and the Thrift Store is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

–The board approved the 2020-2021 School Calendar which includes August 3 as First Day of School (abbreviated); October 12-16 Fall Break; November 25-27 Thanksgiving Holiday; December 21-January 1 Holiday Break; March 29-April 2 Spring Break; May 14 Graduation; May 21 Last Day of School.
