Union City, Tenn.–A number of Union City High School students had their work on display at the recently held UT Martin College Art Day and High School Art Exhibition.
Seven members of Hilary Webb’s class had work accepted and shown for five days prior to the annual event at the UTM Fine Arts Building/Gallery.
Among those students and the titles of their entries were Carol Ullrich (Paper Travels), Madison Halstead (Hues of People), Elijah Cavalier (Long Commute), Aubree Keeling (Downtown Union City and Heavy Handed), Abby Wagner (Lucid City), Dream Pitchford (Night Lady) and Olivia Hill (The Art of Sign).
Cavalier received an honorable mention award in the Drawing category for his work.
Thirteen UCHS students in all took part in the occasion.
Webb’s classes have been participating in the show for several years.
Hosted by the UTM Department of Visual and Theater Arts with a design to promote their degree programs and inspire students to pursue art-related careers, the event was limited to 15 students per school.
They were permitted to submit up to two pieces of art in categories of painting/mixed media, drawing, printmaking/photography and or 3D/sculpture.
Students were allowed to use a variety of pencils, ink and paint and also could utilize wood, wire, paper or graphic design on their entries.
The UCHS contingent attended three classes taught by professors and upper-level art students as a perk of having their entry on display at the show. Classes ranged from drawing to graphic design to sculpture, 2-D design and even art history.
A campus tour was provided for the group following the last workshop.
“For me as a teacher, I like giving my students this opportunity because I’m always excited to see who is truly interested in art,” Webb said. “I’m really pleased that we had eight pieces from seven students accepted and I believe it shows that there is both talent and imagination in the art program here at UCHS.”
