Union City, Tenn.–New head coach Cole Clanton is putting his stamp on the Union City Middle School football program.
Clanton, who’ll also continue to assist on the high school level this summer and fall, has set up offseason plans for the Tornado middle school gridders as they prepare for the 2020 season.
Summer workouts are set to begin May 18 and will include conditioning, strength training and the implementation of football fundamentals. A total of 18 optional practices in all will be held – on Mondays and Thursdays each week from 1-2:15 p.m.
Players and/or parents are encouraged to pick up a packet of rules and guidelines this week at the middle school from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
COVID-19 guidelines and social distancing regulations will be followed in the workouts, including regular sanitizing of all facilities and equipment, the taking and recording of each player’s temperature upon reporting and the limiting of one-on-one activities, according to Clanton.
Though attendance is not mandatory, the new UCMS skipper said incentives will be offered for those who are committed.
Among those perks are first choices of equipment and jersey numbers, a pizza party and the opportunity to dress with the high school team for one Friday night home game.
“Some parents may not be comfortable with their child being part of a larger group, and if a parent chooses not to send their child to workouts, they will not be penalized for their lack of attendance,” Clanton said. “It is our hope, though, that through the implementation of numerous guidelines and our diligence in following these guidelines, parents will feel comfortable in sending their kids to the workouts.
“Our goal as a feeder program is to develop passion for the game, promote a sense of teamwork and create a positive, enjoyable environment. I truly believe that our football program provides a vital link between the school and community. Student, parental, alumni and community involvement in our program helps to enhance school spirit, develop sound minds and bodies, and develop skills and qualities which endure for life.”
Clanton’s staff will include fellow UCHS assistant Josh Keown, Savion Hayslett, Andrew Nipp and Hunter Rice.
