SHELBY COUNTY, TENN. – West Tennessee Violent Crime and Drug Task Force Agents seized 17½ pounds of the deadly drug, fentanyl yesterday during an interdiction operation in the 38131 zip code area of southwest Memphis.
On May 4th, Agents with the West Tennessee Violent Crime and Drug Task Force’s Criminal Interdiction Unit were working a special assignment at an undisclosed location in Memphis where they seized the illicit substances inbound to Memphis from Houston, Texas. No further details are being released at this time.
“Fentanyl is the leading cause of overdose deaths and it’s especially deadly because people don’t always know when they are ingesting it. Getting this amount off the street is a public safety win, and I congratulate the drug task force Agents on it.”
The West Tennessee Violent Crime and Drug Task Force is a law enforcement agency that operates by agreement between the 28th, 29th and 30th District Attorneys General of Frederick Agee, Danny Goodman and Steve Mulroy. The V.C.I.F. Unit operates out of the 29th and 30th Judicial Districts and is made up of full time employees of the Drug Task Force. These Task Force Agents, are assigned to work fulltime in the nine most dangerous zip codes in Memphis and Dyersburg which is funded in part by the Governor Bill Lee’s Violent Crime Initiative Fund grant (V.C.I.F.).
Task Force Director Johnie Carter said, “The men and women of the Drug Task Force risk their lives every day to reduce the flow of fentanyl into our wonderful city that jeopardizes the health and well-being of our citizens.
